Essentially, a solenoid is an electromagnet: it's made of a copper coil wound on a frame housing, with a free-flowing metal frame type housing in the center of the coil. When electricity is powered on, the plunger is pulled toward the center of the solenoid coil. This allows the solenoid to pull ("pull" from one end) or push ("push" from the other end).

This push pull  solenoid is quite nice and has a lot more power for a reasonable size (compared to our small solenoid). It has a 40mm long housing and a fixed frame with a spring (to hold the shaft). This means that the solenoid moves the shaft when 24V is applied, and when there is no pulling force, the return spring returns the shaft to its original position. It is very practical. Many cheap solenoids can only push or pull the shaft and have no armature to hold the shaft (the shaft will fall off the solenoid). Cheap solenoids also have no return spring.
