Principle of Flapper Solenoid: 

A flapper solenoid is made with a copper coil, moving plunger and a special design flap, When the electric current passes through copper coil, the plunger retracts. When the current stops passing, the plunger goes back to the previous position with the help of a spring.

Working Principle

The operation of a tubular solenoid depends on the principles of electromagnetism. When an electric current is passed through the copper coil wire, it produces a magnetic field around the copper coil wire. By coiling the wire, the magnetic field inside the coil is intensified. Once the copper coil is energized, the magnetic field generated pulls or pushes the plunger forward. The strength of the magnetic field, and thus the force exerted on the plunger, is proportional to the amount of current flowing through the coil. This allows for precise control of the solenoid’s movement, making it ideal for applications that require high precision and reliability.

Tubular Solenoid can work for longer hours without getting their coil overheated or burnt out.

The plunger of the solenoid placed in the solenoid cavity. Made out of soft iron with nickel coat, plunger works as an actuator for the solenoid. The movement of the plunger defines solenoid to be a pull or push type. The one in the Insight is a pull one because the plunger goes inside the solenoid cavity when energized.

There are two holes in the plunger through which the load can be attached to the solenoid. In the resting state, the plunger is partially out of the metallic can and in the energized state the plunger gets attracted towards the can (due to magnetic field) and is pulled inside it.

In addition to the plunger, two other parts can be seen near it: “nut and lock washer”. They come into play when solenoids are mounted on surfaces or integrated with machines. Principle of the starter solenoid:

The starter solenoid is an electromagnet which is actuated to engage the starter motor of an internal engine fixed in the car or the machine. It is normally attached directly to the starter motor which it controls.

How is the solenoid relay work?

A solenoid relay can get a large electric current from the car/machine battery and a small electric current from the ignition switch. When the ignition switch is turned on, a small electric current is sent through the starter solenoid. This causes the solenoid relay to close a pair of heavy contacts, thus relaying a large electric current through the starter motor, which in turn sets the engine in motion.
The starter motor is a series, compound, or permanent magnet type electric motor with a solenoid and solenoid operated switch mounted on it. When low-current power from the starting battery is applied to the starter solenoid, usually through a key-operated switch, the solenoid closes high-current contacts for the starter motor and it starts to run. Once the engine starts, the key-operated switch is opened and the solenoid opens the contacts to the starter motor.
